BARF vs.
prey model.

Two people can both say they "feed raw" and be doing genuinely different things. Here's what actually separates the BARF framework from prey model, where the two agree more than the internet arguments suggest, and how to decide which fits your dog.

"Raw feeding" gets treated like a single diet, but it isn't one. Ask five raw feeders what they feed and you'll get answers that share a base — muscle meat, organ, bone — and then diverge sharply on everything else: whether vegetables belong in the bowl, how strictly to measure ratios, and whether whole prey items are the goal or an occasional bonus. Most of that divergence traces back to two named frameworks: BARF and prey model. Neither is a brand, a certification, or a single correct answer — they're two different starting philosophies that a lot of raw feeders blend together in practice without necessarily knowing the terms.

Understanding the actual difference matters less for picking a side and more for making sense of conflicting advice. A forum post insisting raw must include pureed vegetables and another insisting vegetables have no place in a carnivore's bowl aren't contradicting each other by accident — they're usually coming from these two different frameworks, each internally consistent on its own terms.

What BARF actually means.

BARF stands for "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food" (an evolution of an earlier term, "Bones and Raw Food"). The framework was popularized by Australian veterinarian Ian Billinghurst in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and it structures a diet around a defined ratio: roughly 70% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bone, 7% liver, 7% other secreting organ, and the remaining portion split between pureed vegetables, fruit, and occasionally a small amount of seeds, nuts, or dairy like plain yogurt or kefir.

The reasoning behind including plant matter is that wild canids historically consumed some plant material indirectly — via the stomach and intestinal contents of herbivore prey — and that pureed (not whole) vegetables can supply fiber, phytonutrients, and antioxidants in a form a dog's digestive system can access, since dogs lack the enzymes to break down intact plant cell walls the way a true herbivore does. BARF-style commercial products and home-prep guides typically call for finely processed or lightly steamed vegetables specifically because whole raw vegetable pieces mostly pass through undigested.

What prey model actually means.

Prey model (sometimes "prey model raw" or PMR) takes a narrower reference point: what a wild canid's prey animal looks like, broken down into its rough anatomical composition, and skips the plant-matter step entirely. The commonly cited ratio is 80% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bone, and 10% organ (roughly half of that as liver), with no vegetables, fruit, grains, or dairy added. This is the ratio most people mean when they reference "80/10/10," and it's the framework closest to what most commercial raw brands, including ours, build their base blends around.

A stricter version of prey model — sometimes called "whole prey" — goes further and feeds intact, unground animals (whole rabbits, whole quail, whole fish) rather than ground blends, on the reasoning that this most closely replicates what a wild canid actually eats: skin, connective tissue, and organ in their natural proportions and structure rather than a formulated approximation. Whole prey feeding is a smaller subset of prey model overall, and it comes with real practical constraints — sourcing, freezer space, and a dog's ability to safely consume bone-in whole animals — that keep it less common than ground 80/10/10 feeding.

Where the two frameworks actually agree.

The disagreement gets more airtime than the overlap, but the overlap is bigger than it looks from the outside:

  • Both center on raw, unprocessed meat, organ, and bone as the core of the diet — neither framework is built around a cooked or extruded product.
  • Both reject grain and starch-heavy filler as a significant caloric source, which is the single biggest departure either one makes from a typical commercial kibble formula.
  • Both treat organ meat as non-negotiable, not optional — liver and other secreting organ are where the micronutrient density lives in either framework, and skipping it is a mistake regardless of which camp you're in.
  • Both use bone as the calcium and phosphorus source rather than a synthetic mineral supplement, whether that bone is ground into a blend or fed as a raw meaty bone piece.

In practice, a lot of raw feeders — and most commercial raw brands — land somewhere between the two named frameworks rather than following either one to the letter. A ground blend with no added vegetables is closer to prey model in structure; the same blend with a small amount of pureed vegetable matter added would lean BARF. Neither is "more raw" than the other — they're two structured approaches to the same underlying idea.

The real disagreement: plant matter.

Strip away the branding and the actual argument between BARF and prey model advocates comes down to one question: does a dog benefit from plant matter in the bowl, or is it unnecessary filler for an animal built to eat meat, organ, and bone?

The BARF-side case is that small amounts of pureed vegetable and fruit matter can supply fiber that supports stool quality and gut motility, along with phytonutrients and antioxidants not present in muscle meat and organ alone. The prey-model-side case is that dogs are facultative carnivores whose digestive tract — short, acidic, built for animal protein and fat — gets everything it needs from meat, organ, and bone, and that added plant matter is a holdover from human dietary assumptions rather than a canine physiological need.

Neither side is working from a large body of independent, long-term controlled research comparing dogs raised strictly on one framework versus the other, and it's worth being skeptical of anyone — on either side — who presents this as a settled question with hard data behind it. What's more useful in practice than picking a winner is watching an individual dog: stool quality, coat, energy, and weight tend to tell you more about whether a specific ratio is working than which named framework it technically falls under.

Portion math for either approach.

The percentage-of-body-weight math is the same regardless of which framework you follow — what differs is how that percentage gets divided internally. Both start from the same baseline: 2-3% of a dog's ideal body weight per day for an adult at maintenance, adjusted up for an active or working dog and down for a lower-activity or overweight dog.

  • 30 lb dog at 2.5% maintenance: 12 oz/day. Prey model split: roughly 9.6 oz muscle, 1.2 oz bone, 1.2 oz organ. BARF split: roughly 8.4 oz muscle, 1.2 oz bone, 1.7 oz organ, 0.7 oz vegetable/fruit matter.
  • 60 lb dog at 2.5% maintenance: 24 oz/day. Prey model split: roughly 19.2 oz muscle, 2.4 oz bone, 2.4 oz organ. BARF split: roughly 16.8 oz muscle, 2.4 oz bone, 3.4 oz organ, 1.4 oz vegetable/fruit matter.
  • 90 lb dog at 3% maintenance (active/working): 43.2 oz/day. Prey model split: roughly 34.6 oz muscle, 4.3 oz bone, 4.3 oz organ. BARF split: roughly 30.2 oz muscle, 4.3 oz bone, 6.0 oz organ, 2.7 oz vegetable/fruit matter.

Split into at least two meals regardless of framework. If adding vegetable matter under a BARF-style approach, it should be pureed or lightly steamed, not fed as raw chunks — whole raw vegetable pieces largely pass through a dog's digestive tract undigested and don't deliver the intended benefit.

Which approach fits which dog and owner.

For most owners, the practical decision isn't philosophical — it's logistical. A straight prey-model-style ground blend (meat, organ, bone, no produce prep) is simpler to source, portion, and feed consistently, which is why it's the structure most commercial raw brands build around, including ours. It's also the more straightforward starting point for a first-time raw feeder or a dog being transitioned off kibble, since there are fewer variables to manage while you're already watching stool and body condition closely.

A BARF-style approach with added vegetable matter tends to appeal to owners who want fiber support for a dog with a history of loose or irregular stool, or who feel more comfortable including a produce component for their own peace of mind. There's nothing wrong with that choice as long as the produce stays a small, pureed addition rather than a large share of the daily ratio — the core of either framework still has to be meat, organ, and bone.

Whole prey feeding, the stricter subset of prey model, fits owners with reliable sourcing, adequate freezer space, and a dog whose eating style and dental health make consuming intact small prey items safe. It's not a requirement for "doing raw right" — it's one more intensive method within an already narrower framework, not the baseline most people should start from.

Six mistakes people make choosing between them.

  1. Treating the argument as more settled than it is. Anyone presenting BARF or prey model as scientifically proven superior to the other, with no caveats, is overstating the evidence. Watch the dog in front of you.
  2. Adding raw vegetable chunks instead of pureed. If you're following a BARF-style ratio, whole raw vegetable pieces mostly pass through undigested — puree or lightly steam them or skip them entirely.
  3. Letting the plant-matter portion creep too high. Even in a BARF framework, vegetables and fruit are a small supporting share of the ratio, not a significant caloric source. If it starts looking like a fifth of the bowl, it's too much.
  4. Skipping organ meat under either framework. This mistake isn't specific to one camp — muscle-only feeding under either BARF or prey model shows up as a micronutrient gap within weeks regardless of which philosophy you're following.
  5. Attempting whole prey feeding without adequate sourcing or freezer capacity. Inconsistent sourcing leads to an inconsistent diet, which is harder on a dog's digestion than picking either structured ratio and sticking with it.
  6. Switching frameworks repeatedly while troubleshooting an unrelated issue. A skin reaction or loose stool is more often a protein sensitivity or a transition-pace issue than a BARF-vs-prey-model problem. Isolate the actual variable before changing philosophies.

When to call a vet.

The framework you choose doesn't change the warning signs that warrant a vet call: vomiting more than twice in 24 hours, diarrhea that persists past 48-72 hours, refusing food for more than a day, blood in the stool beyond a light streak, or any sign of abdominal distention. A dog with a diagnosed medical condition — kidney disease, pancreatitis, a history of digestive surgery — should have a vet directly involved in choosing and adjusting either framework, not just at the start but as the diet is fine-tuned over time. If you're specifically adding vegetable matter under a BARF-style approach and stool quality gets worse rather than better, that's a sign to scale the plant-matter portion back down, and a vet visit is warranted if it doesn't resolve within a week or two.

The bottom line.

BARF and prey model aren't competing brands or rigid rulebooks — they're two structured starting points for the same underlying decision to feed raw, meat-and-organ-forward food instead of a processed one. The honest answer to "which is right" is that the meat-organ-bone core both frameworks share matters more than the vegetable-matter argument that divides them, and most commercial raw blends — including ours — are built on that shared core rather than a strict allegiance to either camp. Pick the structure that fits your dog's digestion and your household's logistics, watch stool, coat, energy, and body condition, and adjust from there.
