A feeding guide for one of the highest-drive working breeds on the planet. Here's why the Malinois' engine specifically benefits from raw, the portion math for a dog that never stops moving, and what changes over 12 weeks.

Belgian Malinois are bred to work — police service, military deployment, Schutzhund and IGP sport, herding trials, search and rescue. The breed runs a higher metabolic rate than almost any other working dog, burns through calories at a pace that would leave most large-breed feeding charts useless, and carries a well-earned reputation for skin sensitivity and food-driven reactions. A generic large-breed kibble bag doesn't know any of that. It's formulated for an "average" dog that doesn't do bite work, doesn't run field trials, and doesn't shed its undercoat twice a year in a way that visibly tracks with what's in the bowl. Lean body composition. Malinois are meant to run lean and hard, not carry extra padding. Working and sport handlers want a visible waist and a tucked abdomen on their dog — extra weight isn't just cosmetic, it's a direct handicap in bite work, agility, and multi-hour deployments. Protein-forward raw with controlled fat keeps body composition where working-line and sport judges expect it.

Focus and drive during training. That's not a substitute for a real training program, but the food a dog eats before a session is part of what shows up during it.

The 80/10/10 framework, applied to a working Malinois.

The standard 80% muscle / 10% organ / 10% bone ratio holds up well for the breed. Two adjustments are worth making for a Malinois specifically:

Split into two meals minimum. Judge the math against body condition, not the scale alone. You should be able to feel ribs under a thin layer of fat without seeing them, and there should be a visible waist tuck when viewed from above. If ribs start disappearing under padding, trim the percentage back by half a point; if a working dog starts looking rangy or losing topline muscle, add it back. Re-check every two to three weeks rather than daily — day-to-day weight swings from hydration and activity aren't a signal to change anything.

Transition: cold turkey vs. 7-day.

Malinois with no known GI sensitivity typically handle a cold-turkey switch without issue — skip the next meal, offer raw at the meal after.

What changes in 12 weeks.

Week 1–2: Stool volume drops and firms up. Some dogs have a short loose-stool window in the first 2–3 days as the gut adjusts to a different digestion rate. Energy tends to feel less spiky — fewer of the crash-and-burn cycles handlers associate with high-carb kibble, and less of the frantic, food-obsessed pacing some Malinois show around mealtime on a lower-satiety diet.

Week 3–4: Coat and skin start to show it. Many handlers report less scratching and fewer recurring hot spots, along with less of the ear irritation that tends to flare up in this breed. Shedding pattern comes in less matted, more even, and the double coat starts to feel less brittle at the tips.

Week 5–8: Muscle definition becomes more visible, especially in dogs on an active training program. Body condition tightens toward working-line lean, and handlers running conditioning drills often notice a dog that recovers its breathing faster between reps.

Week 9–12: Recovery between hard training sessions is frequently reported as faster — less next-day stiffness after a heavy bite-work or agility day. In older working Malinois (6+ years), joint stiffness after a hard day often eases, and handlers commonly describe a dog that's more willing to go again the next session rather than needing an extra rest day.

The six mistakes Malinois owners make on raw.

  1. Underfeeding a high-output dog because the bowl "looks smaller" than a scoop of kibble. Raw is calorie-dense per ounce, so the portion looks modest next to a heaping cup of kibble even when the calorie count matches or exceeds it. Trust the percentage math against body condition, not the visual volume in the bowl.
  2. Feeding a full meal immediately after hard training or bite work. Let the dog cool down and settle first — same logic that applies to any athletic breed around exertion and a full stomach. Give it at least 30–45 minutes.
  3. Skipping organ meat because "the dog only wants the muscle." Organ is where the micronutrients live. It isn't optional — a muscle-only diet will eventually show up as a dull coat or flagging energy, usually within six to eight weeks.
  4. Rotating too many proteins at once while troubleshooting a skin reaction. That makes it impossible to isolate which protein, if any, is the actual trigger. Pick one protein and hold it for the full trial window before changing anything else.
  5. Assuming one bad reaction to a rich training treat means the whole raw diet failed. Isolate variables before abandoning the diet and going back to kibble — a single greasy treat is a far more common culprit than the base diet itself.
  6. Not adjusting portions between competition season and off-season. A dog's caloric needs can swing hard when training load changes; the portion math should move with it, not stay fixed year-round.

When to call a vet.

Vomiting more than twice in 24 hours, diarrhea past 72 hours, blood in stool beyond a streak, or refusing food past 24–36 hours — notable in a breed that is typically highly food-motivated, so a sudden loss of appetite is itself a signal worth taking seriously. Any sign of abdominal distention, unproductive retching, or restlessness after a meal warrants an immediate vet visit; those are bloat symptoms and bloat is an emergency, not a wait-and-see situation. And if skin issues don't improve after a full 8–12 week single-protein trial, that's a sign to move from diet experimentation to a vet-run allergy workup rather than continuing to rotate proteins on your own.

Final note.

Raw feeding doesn't rewrite genetics or replace a real conditioning program — a Malinois still needs structured training and a handler who understands drive.
