Raw feeding through
pregnancy and whelping.

A pregnant or nursing dog's nutritional needs shift more, and faster, than at any other point in her life outside of puppyhood. Here's how calorie and calcium needs change by stage, why calcium timing specifically deserves care, what changes once the litter arrives, and where this is a job for you and a vet together, not a diet alone.

Whelping a litter puts more demand on a dog's body than almost anything else she'll go through. Gestation is comparatively low-demand for most of its length, then calorie and nutrient needs climb steeply in the final third, and lactation afterward can roughly double or triple her maintenance calorie needs depending on litter size. Lactation: This is where volume increases the most — feed to appetite rather than a fixed percentage, since a dam nursing a large litter genuinely needs more than the math for her body weight alone would suggest. Free-feeding or 4+ smaller meals a day works well for most nursing dams, since a full nursing schedule leaves little time or interest for one or two large sit-down meals.

Protein and fat quality matter more here than at any other stage. Milk production draws heavily on the dam's own reserves if intake doesn't keep pace, so a consistent, high-quality protein and fat source is doing more work during lactation than it would at maintenance. This is not the stretch to cut corners on protein quality to save cost — what the dam eats is, indirectly, what the litter is fed too.

Fresh water access matters more during lactation than almost any other stage — nursing pulls significant fluid, and raw's natural moisture content helps but doesn't replace a full water bowl checked multiple times a day.

Portion math by stage.

Starting point is her pre-pregnancy maintenance intake at roughly 2-2.5% of ideal body weight per day, then scale from there:

  • Weeks 1-4: Hold at normal maintenance — no meaningful increase needed yet.
  • Weeks 5-9: Increase gradually to roughly 1.25-1.5x maintenance by whelping (about 25-50% above baseline).
  • Peak lactation (weeks 3-4 postpartum, large litter): Can reach 2-3x maintenance — feed to appetite and body condition rather than stopping at a fixed multiple.

A 60 lb working-breed dam at maintenance eating roughly 20-24 oz/day might be up around 25-30 oz/day by late pregnancy, and 40-60 oz/day (split across several meals) at peak lactation with a large litter. Six mistakes breeders make feeding through this stretch.

  5. Missing early weight loss during lactation. A dam can lose condition fast while nursing a demanding litter if intake doesn't keep pace — weigh her, don't just eyeball it, especially past week 2 postpartum.
  6. Changing protein sources or introducing anything new during this window. Pregnancy and lactation are not the time to experiment with a new protein or format — keep the diet consistent and proven through the whole cycle.

When to call a vet.

This entire stretch deserves a lower threshold for a vet call than normal, not a higher one. Muscle tremors, stiffness, restlessness, panting, or disorientation in a nursing dam — especially in the first 3-4 weeks postpartum — can signal eclampsia (hypocalcemia), which is a genuine emergency and needs immediate veterinary attention, not a wait-and-see approach or a diet adjustment at home. Refusal to eat for more than a day at any stage (outside the normal pre-whelping appetite drop), vomiting, diarrhea past 24-48 hours, a temperature spike, or any sign of mastitis (hot, swollen, or painful mammary tissue) all warrant a call. Ideally, work out a feeding and calcium plan with your vet before breeding, not after a problem shows up — this is exactly the kind of stage where planning ahead matters more than reacting well.
