Getting calcium and phosphorus
right in a raw diet.

It's the single most common way a homemade raw diet quietly goes wrong — not from a bad ingredient, but from a mineral ratio nobody's tracking. Here's what the calcium-to-phosphorus balance actually is, why bone is the piece that fixes it, the target range to aim for, and the real portion math for getting there.

Ask a room full of raw feeders what goes wrong most often in a homemade diet, and the answer isn't usually a bad cut of meat or the wrong protein — it's the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, quietly off for months before anything visible shows up. Muscle meat is naturally high in phosphorus and low in calcium. Left uncorrected, an all-muscle bowl builds a mineral imbalance slowly enough that it's easy to miss until a vet points it out on an X-ray or a bloodwork panel.

This isn't a reason to fear raw feeding — it's a reason to understand the one piece of the diet that actually needs to be measured rather than eyeballed. Bone is the fix, and once you know how much bone gets you into the right range, the rest of the ratio takes care of itself.

What the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio actually is.

Every raw diet is built from three broad components: muscle meat, organ, and bone. Two of those three — muscle and organ — are phosphorus-heavy and calcium-poor on their own. Bone is the outlier: it's the one component concentrated enough in calcium to pull the whole diet's ratio back into a workable range.

A dog's body needs both minerals, and it needs them in something close to the right proportion to each other, not just each one hit at some daily minimum. Calcium and phosphorus work together in bone formation, muscle function, and nerve signaling — get the ratio badly skewed in either direction for long enough and the body starts pulling calcium from where it's stored (the skeleton) to correct the imbalance elsewhere, which is the mechanism behind the slow-building problems raw feeders are actually trying to avoid.

Why an all-muscle bowl breaks the ratio.

Muscle meat run through a lab comes back phosphorus-dominant — a ratio that runs the wrong direction relative to what a dog's skeletal system is built to handle. Organ meat doesn't fix this; liver, kidney, and spleen are valuable for other reasons, but they're phosphorus-heavy in the same direction as muscle, not a calcium source.

This is exactly why "raw" and "balanced raw" aren't the same claim. A dog fed straight ground muscle meat, even from excellent-quality beef, is eating an unbalanced diet no matter how clean the sourcing is. The imbalance doesn't cause a dramatic reaction the way a food-safety issue would — it builds over weeks and months, which is part of why it's the mistake that catches DIY feeders off guard more than any other.

The target range, and how bone gets you there.

Raw feeding communities generally work toward a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio somewhere in the range of roughly 1:1 to 2:1 (calcium to phosphorus), with something closer to the middle of that range treated as the safer, more forgiving target for most adult dogs. Bone is what moves the ratio from a phosphorus-dominant baseline into that range, because bone itself is calcium-dense in a way nothing else in the bowl is.

Get the bone percentage wrong in either direction and there's a real consequence, not a theoretical one:

  • Too little bone: a slow-building calcium deficiency. Early on it's invisible; over months it can affect bone density, and in a growing puppy it's a more urgent concern because the skeleton is actively being built during that window.
  • Too much bone: excess calcium relative to phosphorus, which shows up faster and more visibly as hard, chalky, difficult-to-pass stool — often called "bone stool" — and in more extreme cases, constipation serious enough to need a vet visit.

Portion math: turning bone content into a real bowl.

The 10% figure only works if it's measured against actual bone weight, not the weight of a bone-in cut. This is where the math trips people up most: a raw meaty bone like a chicken back or wing isn't 100% bone by weight — it's roughly half meat, half bone in a lot of common cuts. Counting a whole chicken wing as "10% of the diet, done" usually overshoots the real bone contribution, because half of that wing's weight is muscle, not mineral.

Using 2-2.5% of ideal body weight per day as the baseline daily total for an adult dog at maintenance, here's what the bone component looks like broken out:

  • 40 lb dog: roughly 1 lb/day total — bone content should land near 1.6 oz of that, which is a very different amount than a single whole chicken wing.
  • 65 lb dog: roughly 1.6 lb/day (26 oz) total — bone content near 2.6 oz.
  • 90 lb dog: roughly 2.25 lb/day (36 oz) total — bone content near 3.6 oz.

If you're assembling a diet from separate cuts and bones rather than a pre-formulated blend, weigh the bone component directly for the first several weeks rather than estimating by eye or by piece count — bone is easy to underestimate because it looks small next to a pile of muscle meat, and it's easy to overestimate when it's still attached to meat on a whole cut. A pre-ground blend removes this step entirely, since the bone is measured and mixed into the correct percentage before it ever reaches a bowl.

Six mistakes that throw the ratio off.

  1. Feeding straight muscle meat with no bone source at all. The most common version of this mistake — usually from feeding boneless cuts because they're easier to source or portion, without adding a separate calcium source to compensate.
  2. Counting a whole raw meaty bone as 100% bone by weight. A chicken wing, neck, or back is part meat, part bone. Look up or weigh the actual bone content of the specific cut instead of assuming the whole piece counts.
  3. Feeding only boneless muscle "for variety" too often. Some boneless meals are fine within an otherwise balanced week — the mistake is letting boneless meals become the majority of the diet without tracking it.
  4. Assuming a rotation of different meats automatically balances the ratio. Protein variety doesn't fix a mineral ratio. Beef, chicken, and turkey muscle are all phosphorus-heavy in roughly the same direction; only the bone content changes that math.
  5. Adding calcium supplements on top of an already-balanced commercial blend. A properly formulated blend has already done this math. Layering eggshell powder, bone meal, or a calcium supplement on top of a complete blend risks pushing the ratio too far the other way.
  6. Applying the adult ratio and daily percentage directly to a puppy. Growing dogs need closer attention to calcium during the growth window, not a scaled-down version of the adult approach — see below.

Puppies need a tighter tolerance, not just a smaller portion.

A growing puppy's skeleton is being built in real time, which makes the calcium-phosphorus balance a more urgent detail than it is for an adult dog at maintenance. Both too little and too much calcium during the growth window can affect skeletal development, and that risk is highest in large- and giant-breed puppies growing toward a big adult frame quickly.

This is not a place to estimate. Talk to your breeder or vet about puppy-specific portions and calcium intake rather than applying the adult daily percentage or bone ratio directly — the margin for error is genuinely smaller during active growth than it is once a dog reaches skeletal maturity.

A pre-formulated blend removes the guesswork.

All of the math above exists because DIY raw feeding asks you to be your own nutritionist for the mineral side of the diet, and bone is the ingredient that's genuinely easy to get wrong in either direction. On the other end, a dog on a long-term homemade or boneless diet that shows reduced activity, reluctance to bear weight, or any change in gait deserves a vet visit and bloodwork rather than a wait-and-see approach — those can be signs of a mineral imbalance that's been building longer than it looked. Puppies showing any of the above, and any dog with a diagnosed kidney or parathyroid condition, should have a vet directly involved in setting and adjusting the ratio, not just consulted after something looks off.

The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is the part of a raw diet that punishes guesswork the most, because the imbalance builds quietly and the fix — bone, in the right amount — is easy to under- or overshoot without weighing it.
