A working dog isn't a couch dog with a job title. Bite work, herding trials, protection sport, SAR, or just a farm dog that covers miles a day — the workload changes what the body actually needs. Here's what raw feeding changes, why kibble struggles to keep up, and how to think about it if you're feeding a dog with real output to recover from.
"Working dog" covers a lot of ground: police and military service, Schutzhund/IGP and French ring, herding trials, search and rescue, hunting, sledding, or a farm dog that's just genuinely active all day instead of decorative. What they share is output — real physical and mental workload that a couch pet doesn't have. Nutrition built for an "average" dog gets asked to do a job it was never designed for.
Large-breed "active dog" kibble formulas try to solve this by cranking up calorie density, usually with more fat and more carbohydrate. That moves the calorie number but doesn't address the deeper issue: working dogs need more of specific things — usable protein, joint-support compounds, moisture, and micronutrients — not just more calories in a bag.
Why workload changes nutritional need.
Energy systems. Explosive, anaerobic work (bite work, agility, short sprints during herding) draws on glycogen and creatine phosphate systems differently than the steady aerobic output of sledding or long farm days. Both need more usable energy than a sedentary dog, but the macronutrient mix that supports each differs — protein and fat-forward for explosive/recovery-heavy sports, slightly higher sustainable-energy needs for endurance work.
Joint and connective tissue load. Jumping, hard stops, lateral cuts, and impact work put real stress on tendons, ligaments, and joints — measurably more than a daily walk. Bioavailable collagen and glucosaminoglycans (found naturally in raw meaty bone and tripe) support that tissue in a form the body absorbs directly, rather than as an isolated supplement added back into kibble after processing degrades much of it.
Recovery window. A working dog's body is doing repair work every night — muscle fiber, connective tissue, and metabolic recovery from that day's output. Protein quality and micronutrient density during that recovery window matter more for a working dog than for a dog whose most demanding activity is a walk around the block.
Thermoregulation and hydration. Raw food carries significant natural moisture (working out to roughly 65-70% water by weight), which supports hydration and thermoregulation during and after exertion — something a completely dry kibble diet has to make up for entirely through separate water intake.
Where generic "active dog" kibble falls short.
- Calorie-dense via carbohydrate, not protein. The cheapest way to raise a kibble's calorie count is more starch. That fills a calorie target on paper without necessarily improving what the muscle and connective tissue actually use for repair.
- Processed protein. Extrusion (the high-heat, high-pressure process that makes kibble) alters protein structure and degrades some heat-sensitive nutrients, meaning the finished product often needs synthetic vitamins sprayed back on after cooking.
- One-size-fits-all formulation. A single "large breed active" bag is trying to serve a Malinois doing bite work, a Border Collie herding all day, and a Lab on a farm — three very different recovery and joint-load profiles, one formula.
- Low moisture. Kibble is roughly 10% water. A working dog's hydration needs during and after real exertion are higher than a bag of dry food alone typically accounts for.
The 80/10/10 framework for a working dog.
Standard raw ratios (80% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bone, 10% organ, with roughly half the organ portion as liver) are a solid starting baseline. For a working dog specifically, most handlers lean the ratio slightly toward more organ and a protein source with a strong iron/zinc profile, since recovery-heavy training cycles draw on those stores faster than in a sedentary dog.
Rotating or blending proteins (beef, chicken, turkey) across the week is common practice for working-dog programs, both for micronutrient variety and to reduce single-protein sensitivity risk over a long competitive or working career. A single well-formulated blend, like a BLT-style mix (beef, liver, tripe, plus bone), also works long-term if simplicity is the priority.
Portion math for real workload.
Baseline for an adult dog at maintenance is 2-2.5% of ideal body weight per day. Working dogs in active training or competition cycles typically run higher:
- Light-to-moderate work (regular training, farm activity): 2.5-3% of ideal body weight/day
- Heavy work (competition season, multi-day trials, service deployment): 3-4% of ideal body weight/day
- Peak conditioning/high-drive sport dogs: up to 4-5% during the most demanding stretches, tapering back down in the off-season
Adjust by body condition score, not the calendar — a working dog's needs shift with training load week to week, not on a fixed schedule. Split into at least two meals; a single large meal in a dog that's about to work or just finished working is bloat-risk territory regardless of breed.
Transition without derailing a training cycle.
Cold-turkey transition (skip one meal, offer raw at the next) works for most healthy adult dogs with no GI history. For a dog mid-competition-season or with any digestive sensitivity, the gradual 7-day protocol (25/75 → 50/50 → 75/25 → 100%) is the safer call — a rough transition week is the last thing you want during a training block that matters.
Time the switch for a lower-intensity stretch of the training calendar when possible, not the week before a trial or deployment.
Six mistakes handlers make feeding raw to a working dog.
- Underfeeding because the bowl "looks smaller." Raw is calorie-dense per pound. Trust the percentage math, not the visual volume compared to kibble.
- Feeding heavy right before work. A full meal before hard exertion is bloat risk and can blunt performance. Feed well after the day's work is done, not right before it starts.
- Skipping organ meat. Muscle-only feeding shows up as a micronutrient gap within weeks — dull coat, flagging energy — precisely when a working dog can least afford it.
- Changing the diet mid-competition-season. Time transitions for the off-season or a lighter training stretch, not the week of a trial.
- Ignoring individual recovery signals. A dog in a heavy training block may need more than the standard percentage math suggests. Watch body condition and energy, not just the chart.
- Stacking synthetic joint supplements on top of a bone-and-tripe-inclusive raw diet without reassessing need. Talk to a vet before layering supplements on top of what the diet may already be providing.
When to call a vet.
Any working dog on a demanding schedule deserves a lower threshold for a vet call, not a higher one — a dog that has to perform can't afford to push through something wrong. Vomiting more than twice in 24 hours, diarrhea past 48-72 hours, refusing food for more than a day, abdominal distention, or any sign of bloat all warrant an immediate call. For a dog in active competition or service work, loop in your vet on any diet change before, not after, a demanding stretch begins.
The bottom line.
A working dog's body is doing more, recovering more, and depending on its fuel more than a dog whose biggest daily event is a walk. Raw feeding doesn't replace good training, conditioning, or genetics — but for a dog with real output to recover from, it closes a gap that generic large-breed kibble was never built to close in the first place.
